Abstract

Building construction and demolition is a continuous process that has been going on since the ancient times, is still going on today, and has a bright future ahead of it. Today's construction business generates a lot of waste on a variety of job sites, whether it's for new construction, renovations, or total demolition. Most of the materials, which are part of demolition, were dumped in to landfills, taking large amount of space since ages. This article aims to design restaurant interiors through adaptive reuse of materials in order to achieve architectural sustainability. It also tries to incorporate these materials into a variety of architectural and interior projects, rather than discarding them in landfills. The paper explains about the steps and process involved in various stages for adaptive reuse of materials in case of identified project. The entire project plays with tension between the past and the present, between old and new materials, the usage of locally available materials, to achieve sustainability and create ambience with touch of traditional or vernacular character to the restaurant. The research is also intended to serve as a model for adaptive reuse of building materials for sustainable interior projects. The paper also results in to the need of implementation of the various strategies like prevention, recycle and reuse of construction and demolition wastes with the mandatory implementation on the construction industry by the formation of Laws, Control bodies, codes and standards, which could reduce 50% impact of the construction and demolition wastes.
