Hypertension is defined as a systolic Blood Pressure of 140 mmHg or more and/or a diastolic Blood Pressure of 90 mmHg or greater. A thick network of blood vessels supplies the nephrons in the kidneys, and large quantities of blood pass through them. Over time, uncontrolled high blood pressure may constrict, weaken, or stiffen the arteries around the kidneys. These compromised arteries cannot give sufficient blood to the renal tissue. This research aims to assess the renal function of hypertensive patients at the teaching hospital of Madonna University (MUTH). One hundred seemingly healthy people and one hundred hypertension patients were recruited for the research at the Madonna University Teaching Hospital (MUTH. Serum creatinine was determined using the Modified Jaffe's Slot Reaction Method, urea was determined using the Urease Berthelot Method, and electrolytes were determined using an Ion Selective Electrode. Data generated from this study were analyzed using SPSS 26. There was a significant increase (p<0.05) in creatinine, sodium and urea, with significant decrease (p>0.05) in potassium concentrations of the hypertensive subjects when compared to their respective controls. This study found that Creatinine, urea and sodium levels are elevated in hypertensive patients. Also there was an increase in creatinine and urea levels in older age groups especially males and this can be attributed with the increased body mass of older males compared to females.
